Reflections on Nature and Human Soul Conference
By Steve Conroy

There was something different about this conference. I felt that things had been stirred deep inside me. I noticed it while I was there in Albuquerque and it stayed with me as our plane to San Jose reached cruising altitude. I inserted my ear plugs and closed my eyes for some quiet time, only to be serenaded by the drums and a drum beat that played on in my head for many days.

The drum beats were implanted on 2nd night of conference when there was a dance. I thought the dance would be a performance by a group of local Native Americans or something but instead of a “demonstration of dance” it was a “participation in dance.” Everyone in the room was involved at some level. I started as a drummer but after about 1 hour of that I could not keep still so I handed my drum to a brother and joined into the dance. This was surely different for me. Not just that I was dancing but the level of freedom I felt while dancing. This truly was a different conference for me.

Part of conference was spent in nature but I never really went anywhere too far beyond the eye sight of resort.  So I normally would not consider this remote enough to be “out in nature” but somehow it was.  We were told not to go into an area that was considered a sacred area. Yet upon reflection I felt the whole area was sacred. Everywhere I walked seemed to have importance and meaning. Different indeed.

Most importantly, It was not just the people that I met, or the reunion with people I had not seen for some time, although I did meet so many great and wonderful people. Lots of Men from MALE’s along with their wives. The weavers, CAC staff, the men from our recently held MROP in Nov 2010, men from New York who were part of my MROP, men from all over the US and around the world, a great group of Australians.... Also in attendance was long time facilitator of deep shadow work who, 10 years ago, had been an instrumental part of my emotional healing, or as Bill Plotkin called it during the conference, my “Awakening.” Then there was just the “casual” conversation with the random people I met for the first time. Every conversation seemed to have some substance, some meaning, some importance that added to the uniqueness of this conference. Even the folks who I shuttled with from an offsite hotel. Three Canadians and a brother from Grand Rapids, Michigan, we became a small group who looked out for each other and shared our stories with each other. We have continued to talk via email in the weeks after conference.

Another aspect about the people in attendance was that most if not all were involved in some way shape or form with what I would consider very important work. People who were healers, who teach and practice accupressure, massage, and lots of other healing arts. Spiritual directors, musicians, singers, poets and artists who were living their passions and sharing their gifts with others as counselors, teachers, work shop leaders, and performers. There were priests, ministers and chaplains, all these men and women of peace, who have given not just their time but their whole lives, many seemed to be at an important threshold. So, from young couples with newborns to older couples who travel around in RV’s they all seemed to be involved somehow and someway.

And Saturday morning we all gathered in the large tent down by the Rio Grande, for a service that featured an IONA Feast. At least 1000 or more. The day had started off very cold and a strong wind was blowing from the north. So as Father Richard started the service the wind seemed to blow harder and harder. The original tent had an addition that ran the length of the north-east side, and as the wind increased, that side took the brunt of it. It shook and vibrated. The wind sometimes lifting the concrete supports right off the ground.  During it all Richard continued to talk and almost all of the 1000 seemed unconcerned at all. Again I was struck by how different this conference seemed. To me it was as if we were on the sea of galilee in the boat with Jesus but nobody was freaking out. These were peacemakers all, who probably continue to do what they do, day by day, through the storms of life.  Again I was amazed at the difference and the significance of this conference.

Right up until the last day I heard lots of great things and took lots of notes. I left with a sense of urgency not really knowing what to do. I have a “list of things” to do, but it feels like they are just preparation for something bigger, something important, something of significance. So ever since the conference my energy level is very high and I am accomplishing some major tasks in my life. It is as if I am Nesting. So in that vein, remembering the woodpecker I heard and watched as I sat in the rain, way up the mountain in Frost Valley, NY. I am going to keep plugging away and trust that I am doing all the right things...... because as Bill said it is all about the Mystery.

The Grain of Wheat – Wrestling with God

by Gary Kalus

Thursday night I was at a church meeting that takes place in a barn, I watched, learned, and saw something new that seemed to be almost hidden, living in the shadows, just out of sight. This was one of those times that I could see it flare up, like a burning bush trying to make itself known. It always starts with something ordinary, a small comment, or some “little thing” hardly worth noticing.

Many times, an opportunity is presented to us in a mystery, as a doorway, or threshold leading us to an entrance into the interior life, trying to initiate us into the secrets of our true identity in God. The beginning of this entrance generally begins with a descent, a downward movement. It has to be this way otherwise we would run or be consumed by a direct, open, face-to-face encounter with the Mystery.

From that evening in the barn, I came away with a new understanding that was tied to my purpose in life. There is a decision we all face. We surrender to God and allow the foundations, the structure of our own lives, our identity, and our destiny to be of His design, His making, and His intention. To work out my identity with God, much of the time feels like wrestling with God – and no longer do I deceive myself believing I will be the winner. Generally, for me, this begins with a descent, a downward movement.

I am convinced these opportunities show up most of the time, if not all the time, as a humiliation that opens a doorway in my life. My first response is to deny there is even a door there or just run from it. It is only grace that leads us back to that doorway again.

I also recognized that I am shadowed by a deceptive shell I have created to protect what I think is “me” but it is the false-self. Much like the shell surrounding a grain of wheat. Most of the time I don’t recognize this shell partly because I cherish it, it nourishes me, and it does so much for me. However, from time to time when I am offended (almost daily) and when I am fully awake and present, I can get a glimpse of this shell reflected in the things I detest in others. It is at these times I reflect on what was told to me; “Any emotional feeling I have is a narcissistic response to an event that is currently being presented to me.” Not to respond to the feelings is like the grain of wheat planted in the ground dying so it can live. My first response to this powerlessness, is to run and miss another opportunity of wrestling with God. I know His faithfulness will bring me once again to yet another threshold a  “door of humiliation” with the next offence I experience.

I have come to the conclusion that I miss so many chances to be apprehended by God in the “little things.” I am powerless to awaken myself out of this trance of living at the trough of the false-self. Being awakened by humiliations can bring a moment of clarity. This can lead to a moment of being found in Him, experiencing Sonship, beloved by God, pleasing in His sight. Does the entrance to this experience really begin with humiliation? Is each humiliation but a stripping away of the ego, or false-self, a practice for when we enter heaven where the ego and false-self won’t be able to survive. Much like the grain of wheat must die to live.

There will be another humiliation just around the corner. Another chance to wake-up and practice dying before you die, take courage, the way up is down.

The City of Saba
by Rumi

There is a glut of wealth in the city of Saba.
Everyone has more than enough.
Even the bath stokers wear gold belts.
Huge grape clusters hang down on every street and brush the faces of the citizens.
No one has to do anything. You can balance a basket on your head and walk through an orchard, and it will fill by itself with overripe fruit dropping into it.
Stray dogs, stray in streets full of thrown-out scraps with barely a notice.
The lean desert wolf gets indigestion from the rich food.
Everyone is fat and full with all the extra.
There are no robbers.
There is no energy for crime, or for gratitude, and no one wonders about the unseen world.
The people of Saba feel bored with just the mention of prophecy.
They have no desire of any kind.
Maybe some idle curiosity about miracles, but that's it.
This over-richness is a subtle disease.
Those who have it are blind to what's wrong and deaf to anyone who points it out.
The city of Saba cannot be understood from within itself!
But there is a cure, an individual medicine, not a social remedy: sit quietly, and listen for a voice within  that will say, "Be more silent."
As that happens, your soul starts to revive.
Give up talking and your positions of power.
Give up the excessive money.
Turn toward teachers and prophets who don't live in Saba.
They can help you grow sweet again and fragrant and wild and fresh and thankful for any small event.
